Lives with her daughter Brazil

Amazon is a strong, capable and feisty female jaguar that came to Love Lions Alive sanctuary in March of 2020. Amazon has three legs. She and her daughter, Brazil, came to us after a zoo in Bloemfontein, South Africa, was shut down for its lack of animal welfare standards. The Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) and the Department of Environmental Affairs reached out to us to give the mother-daughter duo a new, safe home.

When the Love Lions Alive team went to collect Amazon, she was hissing and snarling in fear, occasionally lunging at the iron bars. Now, she and her daughter live peacefully in the enclosure we built specifically for them at the sanctuary. We really wanted to give them a life that satisfies their natural jaguar instincts, and their enclosure has a dam, wetlands, reed beds, rocks and long grass.

Amazon has taken to her new home with confidence and glee, making the most of the water, reeds and hiding spots. She is no longer fearful, but self-assured and confident. She loves to emerge from her hiding spots when we are near her fence and is extremely curious. She will live out the rest of her life at Love Lions Alive sanctuary with her beloved daughter, Brazil, and we will continue to cherish every minute of it.
