Female Jaguar
Mother: Amazon
Brazil is a jaguar small in stature but huge in character. She is a feisty and free-spirited being who came to us at Love Lions Alive sanctuary in 2020 from a zoo in Bloemfontein, South Africa. The zoo had been shut down due to a lack of animal welfare standards, and the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) and the Department of Environmental Affairs reached out to us to give Brazil and her mother, Amazon, a new home.
This would be a challenge as we are more experienced with lions, but a challenge we were more than willing to accept. Jaguars are much faster, more active and intense than lions. They also are not native to South Africa like lions are, instead they originally come from the moist and humid forests of the Americas. Brazil and Amazon came from a zoo in a dry part of South Africa, but we still wanted to provide them with an enclosure that suits their natural jaguar desires. We have done everything in our power to make their enclosure stimulating and joyful for them, including building things to climb, hiding spots, and their own small dam with abundant water and reeds to play in.
Brazil is an active cat, who loves to play and loves her mother, Amazon. She is energetic, muscular and extremely curious. She loves to pop up out-of-nowhere when we are near her enclosure to check out what we are doing.
