Tawny lioness

Frieda was born into captivity in Ukraine, where she was owned as a “pet” by an individual. However, as is inevitable, the large predator outgrew what her owner could provide for. Frieda was then given to an animal park, where she was kept in a perspex exhibition box. Due to the lack of hygiene and fresh air in her box, she developed conjunctivitis. This made the viewers find her “unaesthetic”, so when the Lawrence Anthony Earth Organization appealed for her release, it was successful.

Frieda was given to the organisation and they gave her to us, Love Lions Alive. She was moved to a holding facility. Diya, who was a bit younger, went to the same facility and the two developed a deep and affectionate bond. Later, they were moved to Borispol, Kiev to be closer to a veterinarian for Frieda’s health issues. This is where the Love Lions Alive team fetched them to bring back to South Africa.

She now lives with Diya and Demira at Love Lions Alive sanctuary where she revels in her ability to climb boulders and run through the veld. She also loves to snuggle with her friends.  She still shows signs of neurological symptoms, and will need to have further blood tests and perhaps a skull x-ray done in the future. We love Frieda and will do our best to take care of her and her needs to the highest standards for the rest of her life. We also have plans to hopefully move Cecil/Mkhulu in with the three lionesses.
