When Mela was born in 2015, her mother rejected rearing her. Lions are born as very vulnerable cubs – they are small, blind and need their mother’s assistance to excrete. However, mother lions do occasionally “reject” their tiny cubs.

Members of the Love Lions Alive team hand-reared Mela, developing a deep relationship with her. The idea to create a sanctuary for Mela and lions like her became one of the fundamental inspirations in creating Love Lions Alive.

She now calls the Love Lions Alive Sanctuary her forever home. We have paired her with the equally loving Carl, and they live happily together. Carl is a supportive mate, and Mela has grown into a confident lioness.
